Taylor Swift has officially thrown her support behind Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. In a move that reflects her growing involvement in political matters, the 34-year-old “Cruel Summer” singer announced her endorsement shortly after the much-watched Presidential Debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump on Tuesday night (September 10).
Taking to Instagram, Taylor shared her thoughts on the debate and her decision to vote for Harris this November. In her post, she encouraged her followers to stay informed and take their voting responsibility seriously. “Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most,” she wrote. “As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.”
Taylor’s post was more than just an endorsement – it also addressed the recent surge of misinformation tied to artificial intelligence (AI). The singer revealed that AI-generated photos had been circulating on social media, falsely depicting her as a supporter of Trump. These digitally altered images had been posted on Trump’s website, and the misinformation prompted Taylor to make her stance crystal clear.
“Recently, I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site,” she explained. “It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”
From there, Taylor openly stated her intentions to vote for Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, in the upcoming election. “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” she declared. Her endorsement wasn’t just about policy alignment but also the qualities she admired in Harris. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader, and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
Taylor was particularly impressed by Harris’ choice of running mate, Tim Walz. Walz, the current governor of Minnesota, has long been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive rights, and other progressive issues. “I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades,” Taylor explained in her post.
In true Taylor Swift fashion, she concluded her statement with a bit of humor, referencing a derogatory term that had recently been used against women in politics. Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, had previously referred to Democratic women in politics as “childless cat ladies,” attempting to discredit them. Taylor flipped the term on its head, embracing it with pride. “I also want to say, especially to first-time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early,” she wrote before signing off with a playful, “With love and hope, Taylor Swift. Childless Cat Lady.”
Taylor’s 2024 endorsement of Harris follows her 2020 support for President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris, whom she backed in the previous election.
In addition to her endorsement, Taylor also included a practical step for her fans – a link in her Instagram story directing people to Vote.gov, where they could register to vote and find out more about early voting options. It’s clear that Taylor not only wants to inspire political engagement but also make sure that her fans are taking concrete steps to participate in the democratic process.
As the 2024 election draws nearer, Taylor’s influence is sure to resonate with many young voters, encouraging them to make their voices heard. Swift’s decision to publicly declare her vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz adds to the growing list of high-profile celebrities who are using their platforms to push for political change and engagement.
