Sarah Michelle Gellar is candidly addressing the rumored cast feuds during Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s seven-season run.
In the new book Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts, author Evan Ross Katz interviewed many of the show’s cast about their time on the beloved cult classic series. Sarah, who played the titular role of Buffy Summers on the hit series, gets very candid in the book about the rumored feuds and on-set tension between herself and her cast mates.
She reveals that she had “heated moments” with one of her co-stars – Alyson Hannigan, who played her on-screen BFF. Sarah reflected on their relationship, explaining that they had some tensions because of the environment on set:
“Look, we worked really hard hours. We were young, we had ups and downs. Everybody had arguments.”
She notes that co-star David Boreanaz, who played her love interest Angel, also had his moments of being difficult:
“There were times where David could be a handful. He never really was to me, but I’m sure [he was].”
Sarah states that she too had her moments of being difficult, and admitted that she and Alyson definitely clashed at times:
“And I’m sure I was the same way to people also, right? It wasn’t rosy. Nobody gets along all the time. And Alyson and I had moments. There’s no question. But you’re young.”
She’s taking responsibility for her actions on set, honestly saying:
“There are times where I wish I could have done things differently, but I didn’t know how to handle the stress that I was under. I was really young, and I didn’t have any outside life. I was the one that was always working and sometimes I would be resentful of the fact that they didn’t have to work all the time. It ebbs and flows, and anyone that tells you they get along with everyone all the time, it’s just not true.”
And she also openly talked about how the atmosphere on set could in part be due to director Joss Whedon, who many cast members have stated made the on-set environment very toxic:
“I think that unfortunately, the set we were on and the world we were in was pitting us against each other. I think it would have been different if it was today. It would have been a very different relationship.
But we have a great relationship now.”
