Olivia Rodrigo recently shared the story behind her unexpected tumble on stage in Australia—a moment that left fans and even herself a bit shaken. During her GUTS World Tour in Melbourne, the “Good 4 U” singer accidentally fell through an open hole on stage, later calling the experience “scary” but ultimately “a beautiful thing.”
Talking with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Olivia recounted the incident with a mix of humour and introspection. “It was really scary,” she admitted, “I mean, watching the video back, it’s pretty terrifying, but the show must go on—that’s show business, baby.” Though she took the fall in stride, Olivia later visited the hospital as a precaution.
The accident held unexpected meaning for Olivia, who shared that the incident somehow felt like a twist of fate. Just before her fall, she had been reflecting on her family and Filipino heritage. “I had just been to the Philippines, and I was thinking about my family, my heritage, and my relatives,” she explained. “And I fell. I was all shaken up.”
During her hospital visit, Olivia experienced an eerie coincidence. The nurse who treated her happened to be Filipino and shared the same name as her recently deceased grandfather. “I went to the hospital after—nothing happened they just wanted to make sure I didn’t have a concussion—and randomly the nurse was a Filipino man with the same name as my grandpa who just passed away a few months ago. So, I was like, ‘Wow that was him looking after me and making sure I didn’t get hurt.’ And so I was really happy it happened,” she said, calling the experience “beautiful” in hindsight.
The accident itself happened on October 14, when Olivia was performing in Melbourne and running across the stage mid-song. Suddenly, she stepped into an open area that hadn’t been covered in time. She quickly bounced back, telling the audience with a grin, “Oh my God, that was fun,” and then added, “I’m okay! Sometimes there’s just a hole in the stage. That’s alright.”
Reflecting on the ordeal, Olivia showed a sense of resilience and gratitude. “I’m kind of happy it happened in hindsight,” she said. What started as a startling and scary fall turned into a reminder of family and, in Olivia’s words, “a beautiful thing.”
