Olivia Munn and John Mulaney may now be happily married with two children, but when they first found out they were expecting, their relationship was still in the early stages. Olivia recently opened up about just how fresh things were between them when she got pregnant with their first child, Malcolm.
For a bit of context, John shared some of their relationship timeline back in September 2021 during a late-night appearance. He explained how he was navigating a series of big life changes at the time: “I went to rehab in September [2020], I got out in October [2020], I moved out of my home from my ex-wife [Anna Marie Tendler]… Then in the spring [of 2021] I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia,” he revealed. Shortly after that, he announced that Olivia was pregnant.
Reflecting on those early days, Olivia told GQ, “It wasn’t anything close to ‘dating.’ I barely knew him.” For her, the situation was more complex and undefined than people might assume. She shared, “It wasn’t necessarily, ‘We’re going to be married and live together’ or any of that, but it was ‘I’ll be involved in some way.’” Initially, Olivia thought they’d end up co-parenting, especially since they lived on opposite coasts at the time.
Despite all the uncertainty, John took the news with joy, especially as he was newly sober and beginning to find his footing again. Olivia recalled his happiness at the prospect of becoming a father, saying, “That’s the one thing that made him seem light and happy. I remember he was really excited to tell his parents.” Even in those early days, it was clear that Malcolm’s arrival was a positive focus for John, bringing hope and excitement during a period of personal transition.
Two months before Malcolm was born, they decided to give their relationship a real shot, trying out the idea of being a couple and raising their son together. Their bond strengthened as they embraced parenthood side by side, and the experience of raising Malcolm together brought them even closer.
Their journey eventually led them to marriage, tying the knot over the summer, and recently expanding their family with the birth of their daughter, Méi, in September.
