Nicole Kidman is mourning the loss of her beloved mother, Janelle Ann Kidman. The heartbreaking news came at a poignant moment for the 57-year-old actress, who had just won the prestigious Best Actress award at the 2024 Venice Film Festival for her role in Babygirl.
On Saturday, September 7, Nicole was honoured at the festival for her powerful performance in the Halina Reijn-directed film. However, she was unable to attend the ceremony to accept the award in person, as she had received the devastating news of her mother’s passing shortly before.
Nicole had been actively promoting Babygirl at the Venice Film Festival in late August, charming audiences and critics alike. After finishing her duties in Venice, she left to embark on a press tour for her latest Netflix series, The Perfect Couple. She had planned to return to Venice for the awards ceremony, and she did make it back to Italy just in time.
Shortly after arriving back in Venice however, Nicole received the tragic news. Halina Reijn, the director of Babygirl, read a statement from Nicole during the ceremony. “Shortly after that, my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed,” Halina read, sharing Nicole’s grief with the audience.
“I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me and she made me. I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina,” Nicole’s statement continued. The emotion was palpable, as Halina conveyed Nicole’s love and heartbreak in front of the gathered audience.
Nicole’s words reflected the deep bond she shared with her mother, who had played an instrumental role in shaping the woman and artist she became.“The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken.”
After delivering the heartfelt statement, Halina added a personal message of support, telling the crowd, “We love you all, Nicole.” It was a touching tribute from someone who had worked closely with the actress and witnessed her talent and strength firsthand.
A representative for Nicole later confirmed Janelle’s passing to People, stating, “The family is heartbroken and asks for privacy at this time.”
