Ed Sheeran is making his health his priority – and opening up about the inspiration behind it.
The “Bad Habits” singer appeared on The Late Late Show and sat down with host James Corden to talk about how his “lifestyle shift has changed” since becoming a dad nine months ago.
Ed and wife Cherry Seaborn welcomed daughter Lyra in September of last year, and having a little one in their lives has impacted his life in positive ways.
“Well, I became a dad and I feel like my lifestyle shift has changed. Instead of going to bed at six [a.m.], I’m getting up at four,” he said. “It just feels like what life was meant to be. It’s great. My days are structured.”
He says having a daughter inspired him to become healthier.
“I’m healthier than I’ve ever been. I’m exercising every day,” he shared. “I’m spending so much time at home making the record. Yeah, I feel like a human being. It’s good.”
Not only that, Baby Lyra even sparked his passion for music again – fans will remember Ed took a break from music after his ÷ Tour.
“I didn’t touch the guitar for months after my tour finished,” he recalled of the time. “I kind of had a crisis of confidence of I wanted to not work, but then I was like, ‘Work is my hobby.’ So I basically had to find different things that I had as hobbies so it wasn’t just all [singing]. So I didn’t touch a guitar for ages.”
“Actually when Lyra was born, that’s when I picked it up again and started singing to her,” he shared. “I was brought up on traditional Irish folk music and being able to sing trad songs to her was really, really sweet.”
In another interview, Ed also opened up about how much life has changed for him over the past two years.
“I think I’ve had a few changes in my life over the past two years, not least turning 30 and becoming a dad,” he shared on Kannon’s podcast Open House Party. “I had a friend who passed away in March, which was my first experience with real grief. And I feel like coming to terms with being an adult; I feel my 20s was this crazy whirlwind of partying and working and traveling the world and blah, blah, blah. Then everything stops and I’m, yeah, just figuring out who I am.”
Back in September, Ed went on Instagram to share news of their little bundle of joy’s arrival with fans on Instagram.
Sharing a photo of adorable baby items – a pair of baby socks on top of a knitted blue and green blanket, he wrote, “Ello! A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you … Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.”
“We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here,” the new dad continued. “We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x.”
During the interview, the new dad also shares that his baby girl is busy “just being cute” and is now “making attempts to crawl” and “babbling.”
Ed says he feels “so lucky” about having a daughter – and is open to the possibility of having more kids. “I think I would obviously love more,” he shared. “But I think we’re so lucky to just have one. So if nothing else happens, I’m so happy, basically.”
