Britney Spears’ father, Jamie Spears has now filed new documents petitioning the court to terminate Britney’s conservatorship.
According to the documents, “Ms. Spears is now outspoken in her frustration with the level of control imposed by a conservatorship, and has pleaded with this Court to ‘let her have her life back. In recent months, she has attended two Court proceedings, has certainly made her wishes known about the conservatorship, and has asked this Court directly to end the conservatorship.”
He also stated in the docs that Britney is “entitled to have this court now seriously consider whether this conservatorship is no longer required.”
“As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter,” the docs state. “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”
Britney made headlines in June when she spoke out about her conservatorship for the first time during a court hearing during which she called her conservatorship “abusive” and claimed that her father, who is conservator of her estate, and other conservators have maintained a tight rein over her finances, her career, her personal life and even her reproductive decisions.
In another testimony, she expressed her wish to have her father removed as her conservator, telling the court, “I’m here to get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse. I want him investigated…This conservatorship has allowed my dad to ruin my life.”
Her lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, later filed a petition to officially remove Jamie as conservator of Britney’s estate. And on August 12, Jamie filed paperwork announcing that he is “willing to step down” as conservator of her estate “when the time is right.”
However, last month, Mathew alleged that Jamie attempted to extort money from Britney in order to step down as conservator of her estate – totaling to $2 million.
Following Jamie’s latest filing to terminate the conservatorship, Mathew called the filing a “massive legal victory,” and also a “vindication.”
He said in statement, “Having exposed his misconduct and improper plan to hold his daughter hostage by trying to extract a multi-million dollar settlement, Mr. Spears has now effectively surrendered. There is no settlement.”
“To the extent Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath, he is incorrect and our investigation into financial mismanagement and other issues will continue,” the attorney added.
