Auli’i Cravalho’s life has transformed dramatically since her breakout role in Moana. Now 24, the actress and singer recently reflected on the impact of the animated film’s massive success and the heartfelt way it’s allowed her to give back to her family.
Speaking with People, Auli’i shared how her upbringing shaped her appreciation for her mother, Puanani, who raised her on food stamps on the Big Island and Oahu. “We lived in a one-bedroom apartment in Mililani when I was cast. I slept in the bedroom, my mom slept on the couch. She gave me everything,” she recalled, underscoring her mum’s sacrifices during their early years.
The success of Moana not only brought Auli’i international recognition but also gave her the chance to change her family’s life. “I bought my mommy a house. She’s happily retired,” she said with pride.
Auli’i also spoke about her close relationship with both parents, who divorced when she was young but played a pivotal role in her journey. Her parents once ran a construction company, and their hard work left a lasting impression on her. “Your parents give you so much,” she reflected. “Kids feel a little indebted, I’m going to be honest! But we feel so grateful for our parents’ sacrifices.”
As Moana continues to break records with its sequel’s success, Auli’i’s story serves as a touching reminder of how triumphs on-screen can lead to deeply personal victories off-screen. With her mum enjoying retirement in her new home, Auli’i’s gratitude and groundedness shine through, proving that even as her star rises, her heart remains firmly rooted in family.
